OpenAI launches new safety committee after employee protests

OpenAI on Tuesday announced a new committee dedicated to making safety recommendations to the company’s board, weeks after it disbanded a team focused on artificial BroadCast Unitedligence safety.

OpenAI revealed in a blog post that the new board will be led by CEO Sam Altman, board chair Bret Taylor, and board member Nicole Seligman.

The move follows the recent departure of OpenAI’s head of safety, Jan Leike. Leike resigned, criticizing the company for underinvesting in AI safety and highlighting growing tensions with OpenAI’s leadership. Additionally, Ilya Sutskever, a key figure in OpenAI’s “Super League” team, also left. Sutskever previously played a key role in Altman’s unexpected removal as CEO, but later supported his reinstatement.

Earlier this month, an OpenAI spokesperson told CNN that disbanding the supercoordination team and redistributing its members within the company would better align with its supercoordination goals.

OpenAI also mentioned in the blog post that it has begun training a new AI model to replace the model currently powering ChatGPT. This new model will be launched after GPT-4 and is seen as another step towards achieving general artificial BroadCast Unitedligence.

“We are proud to develop and release vehicles that lead the industry in both performance and safety, and we welcome the robust debate at this critical time,” the company said.

The Safety and Assurance Committee’s initial mission is to evaluate and strengthen OpenAI’s processes and safeguards over the next 90 days. At the end of this period, the committee will submit recommendations to the full board. After the board’s review, OpenAI will publicly share updates on the recommendations it has adopted in a manner consistent with safety and assurance.
