CIIC says Tupapa clinic asbestos removal project completed ahead of schedule

The old asbestos roof at the Tupapa Primary Care and Outpatient Clinic has been completely removed and a new roof installed.

A spokesman for the Cook Islands Investment Corporation (CIIC) said the project was progressing better than originally planned.

“Internal works are currently underway and we expect to begin removing shrink wrap and scaffolding this week to next.”

CIIC carries out weekly asbestos sampling and sends the air test results to New Zealand. They are awaiting the latest results in the coming days.

The spokesman said all tests carried out so far had shown asbestos levels were within safe limits.

Last week, the Ministry of the Interior conducted a site visit and gave positive initial feedback.

The spokesman said the CIIC had not received a formal report.

The spokesperson added that the current cost estimate of $400,000 is “within the project budget.”

According to CIIC, the project not only focuses on asbestos removal, but also includes improving buildings, supporting and improving public health and dental services for the benefit of the community.

CIIC has obtained consent from the National Environment Agency (NES) to store the asbestos material in containers which will be locked, sealed and secured until an agreed method of disposal is determined. The containers will be stored behind the CIIC office.

The project is expected to be completed from May to August 2024.

A clearance test will be conducted before re-entering the building after the roof is replaced.

Health services moved to Te Kou Ward at Rarotonga Hospital on Monday 13 May 2024 due to the asbestos removal project.

Oral health services have been relocated to community health and school dental clinics. Adults can be seen at the Avarua School Dental Clinic, Matawera Puna Clinic, Titikaweka Puna Clinic and Arorangi School Dental Clinic.
