Superstar Beauden Barrett came off the bench to inspire the All Blacks to a 24-17 comeback win over England at Eden Park tonight.
The hosts were trailing by four points before the two-time World Player of the Year took the field and he quickly set up winger Mark Telea for his second touchdown of the night to break England’s resistance.
Immanuel Feyi-Waboso and Tommy Freeman’s fine first-half performances gave England a narrow 14-13 lead and a chance to become the first team to win at Eden Park in 30 years.
New Zealand, coached by Scott Robertson, struggled to regain momentum and Marcus Smith extended England’s lead with a penalty before Barrett came on.
The defender showed great composure to steady the New Zealand attack, first by breaking through the England defence and completing a brilliant pass to Tele’a – who had opened his account in the first half with a clever tackle – before stopping Jamie George’s shot in the final moments.
The All Blacks’ win maintained their strong record at Eden Park and gave England a 2-0 series win, kicking off the Robertson era as head coach of the former world champions.
