Inspiring ideas

Vinaka Imrana Jalal and Graham Leung offer inspiring wisdom on the importance of respect for law and order. Respect for law begins first with parliamentarians, whose task is to make laws for the benefit of citizens. It is the task of public officials, the judiciary, parliamentarians (including law enforcement officers), and security forces to be beacons of hope, guiding the nation on the path of justice, prosperity, and peace. But when those who are entrusted with being its guardians and role models flout the law and destroy the beacon of hope, the ship of state runs aground on the reefs of chaos and destruction. Chaos leads to the breakdown of law and order, bringing a nation to an unprecedented state of stagnation. Rogue governments have no respect for or regard for law and order. “When freedom has no purpose, when it does not want to know anything about the rule of law engraved in the hearts of men and women, when it does not listen to the voice of conscience, it betrays humanity and society.” – Pope John Paul II. Recruitment Process

Former Acting Deputy Attorney General Rabuku said he had three candidates for the position of Deputy Attorney General. In addition, according to the Financial Times (12/7), Minister Pio Tikoduadua said he would advocate for the appointment of a local female Deputy Attorney General. Are these two cases not examples of interference in the recruitment process? Why can’t these learned gentlemen advocate for the appointment of the most meritorious person, regardless of gender, nationality, skin color or creed? Ajay Kumar, Nadi

Special Treat

Our own airline keeps winning international awards, shouldn’t it provide a special treat for our people? After all, one could argue that taxpayers’ money is also part of Fiji Airways’ success. I only wish our locals would receive special packages from our airline. Let’s celebrate in joy and unite in the toughest of situations. At the same time, I really enjoy the tekiteki and warm smiles of our airline’s stewardesses. As they say, only on Fiji Airways. Now, I am planting more colorful frangipani plants, because the new colorful flowers make for wonderful natural tekiteki. Floyd Robinson, Micronesia

village head

I heard that village leaders have been warned that if a missing woman or underage girl is found in the village, they may be arrested. This seems discriminatory when men and underage boys are also reported missing. In any case, are the village leaders equipped with drones and GPS technology? They certainly need it because in a world of “minding your own business”, the likelihood of getting in trouble if a teacher searches a student’s bag is quite high. Too little too late

I wonder if the retired brigadier was dreaming when underworld bosses were setting up their networks in and outside Fiji when his former master was ruling and leading Fiji (FT 10/7). Thank goodness the then Fiji Freedom Party (FFP) was beaten to its knees by three political parties. Imagine if they (FF) ruled and governed this island nation for the next two terms, I believe the trafficking and distribution of synthetic drugs would be uncontrollable and difficult to curb as the illegal proceeds have corrupted and flowed into the veins of politicians, businessmen and law enforcement officers. In any case, I personally want to thank some opposition members today for having the courage to stand on their own feet and break free from the shackles and supreme power of their former leaders. Dictatorship and despicable leadership are the biggest threat to democracy. Areki Dawai DAWAI, Maharaj Pl, Suva

The Southern Regional Semi-finals are in full swing!

The Southern Region Rugby Semi-Finals are in full swing. The Nabua Secondary School Under 15 and Under 17 teams are preparing to take on their big brothers Marist Brothers High School and Nasinu Secondary School respectively in the semi-finals. These battles will be David vs. Goliath and I am sure Nabua Secondary School will relish the prospect of playing against these two rugby families. The morale of the school is high. The boys have been reminded to keep their heads down and the task ahead is huge. The team management has stressed the importance of being humble and respectful to the opponent. Today’s match will have a big impact on the schools that will be given a place in the Dean’s competition. I think the performance of the South African Junior Flyers shows that there is still a lot of work to be done at the grassroots level. In closing, I wish all the best to all the schools in today’s Southern Region Semi-Finals. Toso Nabua! Rajneesh Ishwar Lingam, Nadava, Nasinu
