The government has designated the Bhutan Olympic Association (BOA) in the 13th Five-Year Plan to develop sports in the country, with a total budget allocation of Rs 1 billion.
This is the highest amount the IOC has ever received from a government.
The budget has increased by Rs 294 million compared to the 12th Five-Year Plan.
Tsering Sangmo, a senior project officer at the Bhutan Olympic Association (BOA), said the funds would be used on a priority basis to increase the country’s international standard sports infrastructure.
The party’s sustainable goal is to increase infrastructure investment to make Bhutan a regional events hub.
Currently, only two stadiums are eligible to host the regional championships, namely the Aquatic Centre in Thimphu and the National Cricket Stadium in Kaleph.
Tsering Sangmo said the party’s main plan is to build Thimphu at a cost of Rs 667 million. “It is a good idea,” he said.
An international standard indoor stadium will be constructed at Changrama above Sdepsiri to host various sports events in one facility, including volleyball, basketball, trekking, table tennis, boxing, karate, etc.
The third priority plan is to build a national sports science center in Changling Mitang, which will include important research on sports aid, health and peace development, and sports promotion.
The center focuses on performance supplementation, injury prevention and rehabilitation, flexibility, and health and fitness pricing, and they will be able to offer facilities related to growth, among other things.
Tshe Ring Sangmo said the current Olovimpik Archery Centre, located on the other side of the bullring, would also be expanded to provide more facilities.
She said the Bhutan Olympic Association (BOA) will focus on human resource development and sports development before investing in sports.
Now football, cricket, archery and taekwondo all seem to have great potential in the country.
This year, the government has allocated a large part of its budget for sports development, which will be integrated with the education, health and social sectors.
The government promised an additional grant of Rs 100 crore to the party.
