On Thursday afternoon, July 11, they denounced the arbitrary arrest of businessman Ricardo Albacete Vidal. According to lawyer Omar Mora Tosta, the arrest was for hosting opposition leader María Corina Machado at his home during her visit to the state of Táchira. A few hours before his arrest, Albacete Vidal had lost contact with his family and the National Security Commission raided his company and home. During this operation, several of his employees were also detained without reason.
But who are the businessmen who “disappeared” today?
Albacete Vidal is best known for founding LaMia Airlines. On November 28, 2016, one of the airline’s planes crashed in Colombia, killing 71 people, including 19 players from the Brazilian team Chapecoense. An official investigation concluded that the accident was caused by a lack of fuel.
LaMia Airlines was founded by Albacete in Venezuela in 2009. Despite his plans for growth, the businessman moved the business to Bolivia, where two Bolivian pilots bought the airline. However, investigations have shown that Albacete still maintains control of the company through third parties.
Albacete Vidal also has a political background, having served as a deputy for the Venezuelan left in the 1990s and as a member of the Socialist Workers’ Party of Venezuela (PSUV) during the Hugo Chávez government. Before entering the aviation industry, he ran companies in various sectors, such as stationery, mining and heavy machinery transportation.
The last thing we knew before his arrest was that he had filed a lawsuit in Spain against LaMia Bolivia and several insurance companies, claiming damages of nearly $13 million.
