The announcement by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, may God bless him, to boost the country’s strategic food reserves is reassuring and is considered an important step towards strengthening food security and ensuring a stable food supply in times of emergencies and natural disasters, a goal that countries around the world seek to achieve in order to maintain food stability at the national level.

Food security is considered one of the most important issues in society, and its importance is reflected in many aspects, including its direct impact on social stability, and it is considered a fundamental pillar for sustainable economic development. In view of the global challenges that the planet is going through, production also helps to create jobs for the people of the country, thereby increasing national income, and improves the health of individuals by providing them with healthy, balanced food. With issues such as climate change and population growth, achieving food security becomes even more important to ensure a sustainable future for all.

The announcement was made during a Cabinet meeting chaired by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum at Qasr Al Watan in Abu Dhabi, where His Highness said he and the members of the Council reviewed the work report of the UAE Food Security Committee. This included increasing the national strategic grain reserves by 85 percent and the national grain reserve capacity by 34 percent by 2023, with a special reserve capacity of hundreds of thousands of tonnes. Our goal is to ensure our food security in a sustainable way in any situation and at any time.

The UAE Food Security Council has made achievements in the past 2023, most notably (159) countries joining the UAE Declaration on Resilient Food Systems, Sustainable Agriculture and Climate Action, launching the Global Food Innovation Platform Center and accelerating the use of technology and innovation to transform food systems.

In recent years, the UAE has led sustainable development efforts at the global level and has successfully increased its strategic reserves since the UAE successfully hosted the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention on Climate Change (COP28) at the end of last year. The Ministerial Council also approved national research and development priorities, including a series of global challenge programs to fund research and development, and pass them on to those who wish to benefit from them. Research related to desalination and the development of a comprehensive intellectual property strategy in this field will help it play a leading role in efforts to combat climate change.

The UAE’s success in this area sends a message of assurance to society: food supplies will not be affected in any way and will continue to be supplied under any circumstances.
