The Cook Islands People’s Choice Awards are returning following the huge success of their first year to once again recognise those who best embody the Kia Olana values within the local tourism industry and the community at large.

Cook Islands Tourism chief executive Cara Eggleton said the response last year had been fantastic.

The competition, which covered both corporate and individual categories, received more than 600 nominations, with participation from tourists and residents totaling 22,000 points.

“We look forward to celebrating excellence again this year,” Eggleton said.

The Cook Islands People’s Choice Awards recognise tourism champions in two categories. The Business category recognises tourism operators who deliver exceptional service and memorable experiences, while the Personal category (Kia Orana Champions) recognises passionate individuals who provide genuine, personalised interactions that leave visitors with unforgettable memories.

The inaugural People’s Choice Awards 2023 recognized two outstanding winners – Vaka Cruise in the Commercial category and Mona Taio in the Individual category.

Since receiving the recognition, Vaka Cruise has set a new industry benchmark with the launch of vaka Teariki Moana, while Taio has also received widespread recognition from the community, winning the title of “Woman of the Month” for her contributions.

“As the 2023 People’s Choice Award winner, I am really excited to see how much love and appreciation there is for the work I do. I never expect anything but it really touches me to know that people care so much and recognise my work,” Taio told Cook Islands News.

“I encourage others to pursue what makes them happy. Even if you don’t always realise it, other people can see the good work you do and recognise you for it.

“Keep doing what makes you happy and fulfilled. Keep following your passion and shining in your own unique way.”

The People’s Choice Awards are more than just a recognition of excellence, they celebrate the spirit of the Cook Islands community and the unique experiences that make up our little piece of paradise. It also provides a platform to nominate members of the community.

“They may come for the warmth of the sun, but they remember the warmth of our people long after their visit,” said Noeline Mateariki, global sales and marketing director for the Cook Islands Tourism Board.

“This sentiment remains a fundamental part of our marketing efforts as it highlights the valuable role our people play in making our little paradise unique and setting us apart from other tourist destinations.”

In the business category, the winner will receive a “marketing and promotions” package worth approximately NZ$12,000.

In the individual category, the winner will be awarded the Kia Orana champion title and a “travel and marketing” package worth approximately NZ$7,000.

“Cook Islands Tourism recognises the value of the People’s Choice Awards and has therefore increased the award package to reflect this commitment.”

Nominations are now open. Please visit www.cookislands.travel/PCA and submit your nomination via the nomination form by 12pm on 7 August 2024.

“Cook Islands Tourism invites all visitors and residents to join us in the celebrations. Whether you are cheering on your favourite resort, your favourite guide or the best island burger, this is your chance to say ‘Meitaki ma’ata, Meitaki atupaka, Meitaki ranuinui, Meitaki nui, Meitaki ngao, Meitaki korereka, Meitaki poria and thank you’ to those who have impressed you.

“In addition, your nomination helps promote their business and enhance their brand in the tourism industry.”

Once nominations close, the Cook Islands Tourism Board will review and compile a shortlist of nominees for voting. Details of the voting process will be announced shortly.

“We encourage everyone to get involved in recognizing and celebrating the outstanding contributions of our tourism industry and wider community!”
