Google launched the Dzongkha translation service two years after the Ministry of Culture and Dzongkha Development used Google’s DDCU translation feature.

Google Translate can translate English to Dzongkha and Dzongkha to English. However, there is currently no function to translate images or documents into Dzongkha.
An official from the Ministry of Culture and Dzongkhag Development said that Google only searches for words directly and there is still a lot of room for improvement in language translation.
One Dzongkha translator said that so far, the Dzongkha translation feature on Google is a basic, direct translation, but it is just a translation without overall context or meaning. “It’s a good idea,” he said.
However, if the Dzongkha translation function is improved, future translation work will be easier.
Dr. Tsering Sirgyas, former CEO of Thimphu Information Park and current member of the National Public Service Commission, said Dzongkha is one of the country’s greatest achievements and only a few people speak the language.
He said the advent of Google’s translation tool meant young people were now the nation’s spokesperson. “It’s time to get people interested in literature,” he said.
Dr Tsering Sirgyas said this would help in the development and preservation of the national language.
He said most translators translate legal documents from Dzongkha into English and interact with them, and the Google Translate feature will make their work easier.
The translators will also reduce the editorial work of the Dzongkha News Agency. Dr. Tshering Hilgyas said the government will continue to provide assistance to the people of the country.
The Ministry of Culture and Dzongkha Development is currently working on Dzongkha-to-English and English-to-Dzongkha translations and is developing a natural language system to facilitate translations.
