Prior to her appointment as representative in New York, Shaikha Alya was the Permanent Representative of Qatar to the United Nations in Geneva.
Sheikh Alia Ahmed Al Thani has become Qatar’s first female ambassador to the United Nations, a milestone she hopes will inspire more Middle Eastern women to enter the diplomatic field.
Sheikha Aliya has been a fierce advocate for justice and accountability on the global stage since 2013, when she became Qatar’s permanent representative to the United Nations. Since then, she has worked to open doors for more Arab women to pursue a career in diplomacy.
“It’s very important to me that this thing succeeds and other things succeed,” she told reporters. Pass.
She added: “This is a personal fight and if I fail, no one else will join and there won’t be the idea of more women joining.”
Sheikh Aliya, who is in his 40s, has worked in Qatar’s diplomatic service for nearly 15 years.
The UN diplomat holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from Qatar University and a master’s degree in international studies and diplomacy from the School of Oriental and African Studies in London.
Sheikh Aliya said her father, Sheikh Ahmed bin Saif Al Thani, who served as Qatar’s minister of state and ambassador to the United Kingdom, Sweden and Norway, had a great influence on her career.
As Qatar’s first female permanent representative to the United Nations in Geneva and the World Trade Organization, she paved the way for future generations of Qatari women.
In 2013, the diplomat was also nominated as a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum for improving the state of the world.
