Court confirms investigation into Spanish PM’s wife for corruption

The Regional Court of the Autonomous Community of Madrid on Wednesday rejected an appeal by prosecutors against an investigation into the wife of Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez. The court upheld the decision of a Madrid judge who in April decided to investigate Gomez for suspected influence peddling and business corruption. Prime Minister Sánchez denied the charges and threatened to resign, but ultimately decided to remain in office.

The Regional Court of the Autonomous Community of Madrid on Wednesday rejected the prosecutor’s appeal to investigate the wife of Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez for corruption and other crimes. This was reported by the DPA agency, which was cited by TASR.

The court declared the investigation justified, upholding the decision of a Madrid judge who decided in mid-April to open an investigation into Sánchez’s wife, Begoña Gomez, on suspicion of influence peddling and business corruption.

Sanchez denied the allegations against his wife after they became public and threatened to resign from the post he had held since June 2018. He claimed that right-wing and far-right elements were doing everything they could to bully him. However, he ultimately decided to continue as prime minister.

A woman who has not held public office

The lawsuit against Sanchez’s wife was filed in April by the far-right union Manos Limpias (Clean Hands), founded in 1995. The group accused Sanchez’s 49-year-old wife, who does not hold any public office, of abusing her position to obtain public contracts. The group admitted that the allegations against Gomez were based on media reports.

The Spanish prosecutor’s office and the police’s UCO corruption unit found no evidence of illegal activity by Gomez in their own investigations.
