Addis Ababa, July 10, 2024 (Address) Support for Ukraine was high on the agenda at events hosted by Washington to mark the 75th anniversary of the founding of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

The summit, to be held July 9-11, will focus on reassuring Ukraine of NATO’s unwavering support. In his highest-profile policy speech yet, President Biden stressed that NATO is stronger than ever.

“Ukraine can and will stop Putin, especially with our full, collective support. And they have our full support,” Biden added.

Joe Biden hosted outgoing NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg and leaders of other NATO countries, including German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meroni, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, and Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, who met for the first time.

Leaders of Asia-Pacific partners including Japan, South Korea, Australia and New Zealand also attended the meeting.

China’s growing presence in the South China Sea, NATO’s continued support for its Asia-Pacific partners, and defense spending were other major agenda items at the summit.

NATO was founded in 1949 during the Cold War to respond to the growing challenge from the Soviet Union.
