Cyprus today commemorates the 13 victims of the Mali bombing on 11 July 2011, an event that plunged the country into mourning.
At 8 a.m., the President of the Republic Nicos Christodoulidis attended the memorial service for the heroes of Mali at the Malian naval base “Evangelos Florakis” and delivered a speech.
He then laid a wreath at the Heroes’ Monument at the EMAK site in Kofinou.

On behalf of the Republic of Cyprus, the Cypriot people, I am with you, among you, at your side, conveying a sincere commitment that the sacrifices of your own people have become an unchanging benchmark of responsibility that must be assumed by those who make decisions and show an impact on human life.
Tragedy of Number 11she July 2011 was caused by a series of mistakes, actions and events that had one thing in common – let us be completely honest: the lack of care and concern that should have been shown by many at the highest levels of the administrative, military and political hierarchy. As a result of all this, the state, the country was irreparably exposed in the eyes of its citizens, in the eyes of all of you.
Accidents will happen. However, the key is to act proactively and take steps to limit their impact as much as possible. This should also guide our actions. Establishing the right procedures, training and continuous control is the only way to minimize the chances of accidents and ensure the safety of human lives and national critical infrastructure as much as possible. At the same time, as a country, we have an obligation to instill a sense of safety, reliability and trust in our citizens through actions rather than words.
Dear relatives, I know that no words, no words, can ever ease your pain. Especially today, when the memory of that tragic day is even more vivid. But please allow me to sincerely assure you that as a nation, we are doing everything possible so that the sacrifices of your loved ones will serve as a beacon in our decision-making.this July 2011 is a signpost to take all necessary steps so that we do not experience such a tragedy again.

It is a necessary condition for holding public office and exercising power. More than that. However, in terms of responsibility, every position is premised on a value system that promotes empathy.
Their memory is eternal.
Captain Andreas Ioannidis, Vice Captain Lambros Lambrou, Lieutenant Commander Cleanthis Cleanthos, Lieutenant Commander Michalis Herakleous, sailors Miltos Christoforou, Christakis Christophorou and Andreas died in the explosion of an ammunition box at the Charalambous Naval Base “Evangelos Florakis”. Fire chief Andreas Papadopoulos, chief firefighter Giorgos Giakoumis and firefighters Vassilis Krokos, Spyros Ttantis, Panagiotis Theophilou and Adamos Adamou.
The Council of Ministers declared the 13 people who died heroically heroes, while the judiciary punished those considered responsible for the tragedy.
Three deadly explosions occurred in containers at the naval base, the worst of which occurred at around 5:30 in the morning, shocking the whole of Cyprus.
The naval base was razed and the power station destroyed, placing a significant burden on the economy, while surrounding communities were severely damaged.
