Jakarta(ANTARA) –
The head of the National Population and Family Planning Agency (BKKBN), Hasto Wardoyo, said the agency is working to maintain the total fertility rate (TFR) at 2.1 to ensure balanced population growth.
“If I say (we need) one daughter per woman, it is a hope, not an obligation,” Indonesian presidential spokesman stressed after unveiling the population clock in Surabaya, East Java province, on Wednesday, Indonesia’s state news agency reported.
He said the average fertility rate in East Java is ideal, at 1.9 children per woman, and that this figure must be maintained and prevented from falling further in order for the population to continue to grow in a balanced manner.
“If there are 100 women in an area, then 10 years later, if possible, the number should still be 100 so that the area does not become extinct,” Valdoyo explained.
Regarding the incidence of stunting, which the country plans to reduce to 14 percent this year, he asked the regions to carefully study the results of the Indonesian Health Survey (SKI) and compare them with the results of the Community Electronic Nutrition Record and Report (EPPGBM).
He noted that in East Java, the weight measurement program had reached 97% coverage as of June 2024 as part of the government’s measures to address stunting in the country.
The head of BKKBN said the population clock launched in East Java can collect data and input population data more accurately.
“The population clock data is updated every second (in real time). This is an outstanding step for East Java and this population clock is indeed very necessary,” he added.
