Last week, the committee that oversees the situation of this artist was formed. We sat down at the table for the first time and started putting some very interesting things on it. Just in case someone is still unclear about what this issue is, especially in our field, artists, who sometimes have a bad habit of being out of touch with administrative reasons, I will do four things in three sentences, two minutes, five cents and in a moment we will have it done. All the information and explanations are in the law and can be easily found in BOPA.
First of all I must say that I came to this committee almost for the rebound. At this table, two “artists” need to be present, who are voted from the list of proposals of various associations and cultural entities that first make suggestions and then make the selection. That’s where the first two candidates came from. Some of the chosen ones resigned (the current committee is selfless, unpaid, and must be compatible with work and life), and the next on the list was my name. A lot of explanations, but it’s better to be transparent.
Our main function is to determine whether an applicant for professional artist certification is valid. Not from an artistic point of view, but from a legal point of view. In other words, whether the person applying for certification meets the requirements set by the law for professionalization in the sector. The law is very clear about the legal requirements necessary to make this claim, and I think the function of this committee will be very active. I think we will have difficulty with medium-term planning. The law marks two paths: either meet the requirements now, or submit a five-year professionalization plan.
I do not discuss the flaws and merits of laws, regulations, requirements, disasters or successes, what it has brought or lost. I am not suited to the role I have. I stay at the table. The feeling of this first meeting is positive and will hopefully be a small operational thermometer: we will be able to ask questions, choose, and be the voice of the sector we must represent (or at least try to do so). Not only for decisions, but also for rewards.
The committee wanted to have a dialogue with each arts sector so that the concerns, doubts and contributions could be more clearly understood, and it was not easy to equate sectors with such different artistic characteristics (writers, musicians, visual artists, performing arts) .. nor did we have many reference numbers (associations) to serve as original voices.
It may not be the best law, or the best committee, or the best regulation, but we have to start walking somewhere.
