Two weeks after an explosion rocked a suburban Winnipeg home on June 26, a group of Transcona residents became a model of community, working together to clear debris from roofs and vacuum glass from lawns and driveways.
Their efforts have hit an unexpected roadblock when waste management workers with the City of Winnipeg refused to collect trash and recyclables from homes in the area and left tags on the bins, citing damage to the containers.
When residents call 3-1-1 to request a replacement explodecity staff told them they would have to pay out of pocket.

Councillor Brian Mayes, chair of the water, waste and environment committee, told Global News the neighbours’ response was unacceptable.
“This is really a situation that you couldn’t reasonably foresee,” Meyers said. “(The city) probably should have covered the costs. I may not win this fight, but I do think these guys have valid points.”

Transcona City Councilman Russ Wyatt told Global News by phone that he could not comment directly on the ongoing investigation, but that he sympathized with those affected by the incident.
One resident expressed his frustration with government officials on social media.

Resident Brandi Neves posted on social media that it was “shameful” that no government official, municipal or provincial, came forward to help after the disaster, and called on district councillors and local councillors to take action to resolve outstanding issues.
Mayor Scott Gillingham spoke by phone with Neves Wednesday afternoon and promised to dispatch city departments within a week to address her concerns.
As for the underlying cause of the explosion, neither the Winnipeg Police Service nor the Winnipeg Fire and Paramedic Services were able to provide an update as of this writing.
