Regarding Georgia’s suspension of accession to the EU, the German Embassy in Tbilisi published the comments of Peter Fischer – in the statement we read that the process of joining the European family is determined by the policies of the Ivanishvili government.

At the same time, the embassy wrote that Germany stopped funding precisely because of the actions of the Georgian Dream and that the review of relations with Georgia will continue.

German Ambassador Peter Fischer commented on the suspension of Georgia’s EU accession process:

The European Council, the 27 heads of state and government that make decisions on EU enlargement, decided on June 27 to suspend Georgia’s accession to the EU due to the policy of the Georgian government. Georgia’s accession to the EU has been suspended. This is EU policy. It is very sad because everything could have been completely different. We have been moving fast and we want to move forward, but the speed and quality of the accession process is in the hands of the candidates.

As for Germany, we will also review our relations with Georgia. As you know, we have very diverse and deep relations. Together with the United States of America, we are one of the largest development donors to Georgia. We have decided not to take on new obligations to Georgia for the time being, so there are currently no new financial approvals from Germany for Georgia. The Bundeswehr has also canceled its participation in the “Partners in Dignity” exercise, and we have also canceled the largest forum in the field of law that was held in Tbilisi last year and was scheduled to take place in Berlin this summer, and we are also considering further measures.

In short: the EU accession process is on hold. This is very sad. We should be in a better position, we should move forward, and I appeal to our Georgian friends: we want you to join the EU. But you know the process. You have to meet our criteria, and if you don’t, you can’t join. So the citizens of Georgia and our Georgian friends should think whether the EU is important to them, their children and their grandchildren. If you want to stay in the EU, you have to go back to our path.
