Traditionally, it is a common practice to present gifts to the Alkalolu and chiefs to thank them for their services.

However, the Ministry of Lands has noted that some Alkalolu and chiefs are charging fees in land transactions. This practice has no legal basis. Therefore, it is illegal for Alkalolu and chiefs to charge fees in land transactions.

The minister stressed that while giving gifts as a token of gratitude is permissible in a cultural context, charging fees for land transactions is not only illegal but also completely contrary to the principles of fairness and transparency in land transactions.

In light of this, the Minister urged all Alkalolu and Chiefs to abide by the laws governing land transactions and not to impose any form of fees or taxes on such transactions. Any such unauthorized charges are considered illegal and will not be tolerated.

The Ministry of Lands, Regional Government and Religious Affairs remains committed to upholding the rule of law, ensuring equitable access to land resources, and promoting good governance in land management.
