The Government Office does not agree with the opposition party PS’s claim that the government prefers municipalities led by coalition party mayors during the live meeting. The government supports and will support projects that bring added value to citizens across Slovakia during the upcoming government meeting, the Government Office’s press department said in response to PS on Wednesday.
The government office responded by saying, “The government will not divide mayors and mayors based on political affiliation, but will assess whether individual projects can improve the quality of life in areas that the previous government forgot and did not pay attention to.”
He explained that up to 44% of the total amount of subsidies provided to municipalities and cities in the Handlova and Prievidza regions went to independent mayors and mayors.
“It is difficult to maintain political proportionality when disbursing subsidies, because in the autonomous region of Trenčín, for example, the Progressive Slovak Party does not have a mayor or an elected mayor,” the office noted.
He added that at the government exit conference in Trencin, subsidies worth more than 2 million euros were distributed to 180 entities. The largest part of the total amount paid, or nearly 36%, went to municipalities where mayors ran as independent candidates. Next came mayors of the Hlas-SD party (24%), Smer-SD (20%) and SNS (13%) parties. Also receiving subsidies were municipalities headed by mayors running for the SaS or Spolu parties.
The PS accused the government of saying that the income of the mayors of the coalition is ten to thirty times higher than in municipalities where the coalition is not in power. Socialist MP Marek Rakovic said that in the Puchov district, for example, 83% of the residents live in independently governed municipalities.
“However, the bulk of resources from government subsidies – up to 83,000 euros – go to mayors and mayoresses of coalition governments, whose municipalities have fewer than 8,000 inhabitants,” Rakovic said, adding that their per capita subsidies are 11 times higher than other municipalities. Independent municipalities received only about 35,000 euros in total.
