Opposition MP Aliki Biya reiterated his support for the prime minister and the coalition government.

Taking part in the budget debate on Monday, he said he would work in the best interests of all Fijians.

“We are here to act in the best interests of all Fijians and, most importantly, to bring about the change they desire,” Mr Beah said.

“If that requires some independent opposition members like myself to assist and support the Prime Minister in leading the people of Fiji, then I am more than happy to do so.

“However, this will not stop us as independent members from supporting the Prime Minister in addressing matters that we believe may be detrimental to the Fijian people.

“The bottom line is that we are here for the people, we are bound by the people and we need to do everything in our power to ensure that the voice of the people is heard in this august House, whatever it takes.

“I have said this in Parliament and let me say it again – if not us, then who? If not now, then when?

“We MPs need to make it clear to the Fijian people that we must act now and not wait for others but be seen as bystanders which will make us part of the problem and not bring any solutions to the problems of the Fijian people.”
