It was revealed on Wednesday that a pilot scheme called “door-to-door” transport of primary school-age pupils has benefited 850 children and cost the State Government about €800,000 in the 2023-2024 academic year.
Speaking before the House of Representatives Education Committee, Andreas Nikiforou, director of the Public Transport Department at the Ministry of Transport, said the cost was high because the program was free for students.
According to reports of the committee meeting, Nikiforu said the Ministry of Transport is studying the possibility of cancelling some routes to schools in urban areas due to limited response from students, and retaining routes in rural areas.
The committee meeting discussed the possibility of expanding the “door-to-door” project in primary schools, as well as the issue of school buses for secondary and technical school students, and was followed by speeches by Mr. Oelmek, Chairman of the Teachers’ Union, Mr. Demetris Taliadorou, Mr. Oltek, Mr. Panayiotis Lysandrou and Mr. Loizos Constantinou, Chairman of the Secondary School Parents Association.
Nikiforou added that this year’s service was a success.
