People for People has launched an initiative to provide assistance to Sudanese refugees in Kiriandongo Refugee Camp in Uganda through its Hope Community Multipurpose Centre.
The organization is active in voluntary and humanitarian work in Darfur, Sudan, and has established multi-purpose social centers within refugee camps in Uganda to provide training and production skills and tools to Sudanese refugees.
The move is part of the organization’s plan to support Sudanese refugees and alleviate their suffering through economic empowerment programs. The center provides training services in various fields, besides providing psychological support programs for Sudanese refugees in exile.
Camp resident Muna Omar said the group provided Sudanese refugees with an opportunity to meet, exchange experiences and think more effectively about how to improve livelihoods in the camp and address youth unemployment.
“The Hope Centre provides refugees from Sudan and South Sudan with the opportunity to participate in activities and discuss common interests, including income-generating initiatives and projects,” she said.
Khalid Fadl, a young refugee, said People for People provided training through soap and vaseline making workshops and courses held at the centre, helping young people to gain qualifications and encouraging them to consider starting their own production projects to meet their own needs.
“I hope that other organizations working in this field will continue these initiatives to strengthen the camp communities and provide young people with tools and productive means to improve their economic situation,” he said.
Meanwhile, People for People director Dr Adib Yusuf said they launched the programme after assessing the needs of refugees in terms of food, health and shelter.
“The need for economic empowerment is one of the most pressing aspects that prompted the organization to set up the Hope Community Multipurpose Centre to implement economic empowerment projects chosen by the beneficiaries,” he explained.
Dr Yusuf noted that the organisation aims to achieve several goals through the centre, including improving self-sufficiency, increasing local production, improving the environment and focusing on health.
“The centre also aims to encourage production and innovation among young people and foster a sense of community and participation,” he said. “The training programme received great interest and participation from the camp residents, which gave the organisation an additional responsibility to serve the camp community in the upcoming phase.”
