AWS Graviton4 cloud processors now generally available

AWS says the Graviton4 processors deliver 30% higher performance than the AWS Graviton3-based Amazon EC2 R7g instances. This means the Graviton4 processors are particularly well suited for workloads that require large amounts of memory, such as high-performance databases, in-memory caches, and real-time big data analytics.

What does Graviton4 bring to Amazon EC2 R8g instances?

Amazon said that the R8g instances equipped with Graviton4 have been improved in many aspects compared to the R7g instances and Graviton3:

  • Improve database performance by up to 40%.
  • Large Java applications can be up to 45% faster.
  • The number of virtual CPUs has increased by up to 3 times (up to 48xl).
  • Memory increased 3x (up to 1.5TB).
  • 75% increase in memory bandwidth.
  • 2x more L2 cache compared to R7g instances.
  • Network bandwidth increased from 30 Gbps to 50 Gbps.
  • EBS bandwidth is up to 40 Gbps compared to 20 Gbps EBS.

R8g instances leverage offloaded CPU virtualization, storage, and networking functions to improve performance and security. R8g instances can host applications written in major programming languages ​​as well as Linux-based workloads.

For the first time, Graviton instances are available in two bare metal sizes (metal-24xl and metal-48xl) in R8g instances.

Graviton4 is dedicated to improving energy efficiency

AWS calls the Graviton4 the “most energy-efficient processor we’ve ever designed,” according to a press release. AWS’s approach to improving efficiency for memory-intensive workloads with EC2 includes offloading some CPU virtualization, storage, and networking functions to dedicated hardware and software.

AWS claims that customers can use Graviton4 instances to reduce energy consumption and carbon footprint by up to 60% compared to other Amazon EC2 instances.

“These instances enable organizations to achieve their sustainable innovation goals faster and with better price/performance than comparable Amazon EC2 instances.” Rahul Kulkarni, director of product management for EC2 at AWS, said in an email to TechRepublic.
