Taea wins 2024 Cook Islands Women’s Rugby League Award

Former national sprinter Patricia (Patty) Taea has cemented her status as a top player after an outstanding season in the 2024 Cook Islands Women’s Rugby League season, winning three awards including MVP.

The Cook Islands Women’s Rugby Union has concluded the 2024 season with flying colours, winning five prestigious awards.

The celebrations, organised by the Women’s Commission, highlighted the important role of women in sport, particularly rugby union, a field that was once dominated by men.

The committee, which is run by a woman from each club including Julz Westrupp, June Willie, Hinnah Tatuava and Akaiti Purea, has grown significantly over the years.

The inclusion of the Maine Tuepolo program in this year’s competition marks a significant accomplishment for the 2024 Women’s Rugby League.

The highlight of the evening was the presentation of five prestigious awards, with recipients selected by a committee and players in recognition of their outstanding performances during the 2024 season.

The winners are:

1. Best Defender: Patrica (Patty) Taea
2. Best forward: Juni Willie
3. Golden Boot: Stephen Noroa
4. MVP: Patty Teay
5. Players’ Choice Player of the Year: Patty Teague

Taia stood out by taking home three awards, establishing herself as the best women’s rugby league player of the season.

Her recognition is not just for her game skills, she is also known as one of the top female referees in the Cook Islands, competing alongside male referees.

In her acceptance speech, Taiya expressed her gratitude: “Thank you all for your votes. Women’s rugby league has done a fantastic job this season and everyone deserves an award. In the end, rugby league always wins.”

Cook Islands Rugby Union Secretary and Match Manager Frankie Toa shares insights into the successful season.

“We are integrating women’s rugby league with the men’s game, rather than playing mainly on Fridays as in the past,” Toa said.

“This year we have seen great public support for Women’s Rugby League. The CIRL’s efforts are greatly appreciated as this represents significant development and progress for Cook Islands Rugby League as a whole.”

The 2024 season reflects the growing participation and success of women in rugby league, showcasing the evolving dynamics of the sport and the growing recognition and support for female athletes in the Cook Islands.
