Baby loggerhead turtle rescued off Gozo coastA juvenile loggerhead sea turtle was rescued off the island of Gozo this week after being spotted by a couple on a jet ski.

The Nature Trust – FEE Malta-Gozo said the couple watched the turtle for a while and noticed that it did not dive, but at one point turned over. “This is not normal behaviour and indicates that something is wrong with the turtle.”

They took the turtle to Mgarr Harbour and handed it over to a Gozo volunteer. The turtle, named Jaxon, is now being cared for by the Xrobb L-Ghagin Nature Park and Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre of NTM – FEE Malta.

The NGO said a closer examination revealed that Jackson was underweight and malnourished, so he may have been sick for some time. “We are very grateful to the couple for taking the time to save Jackson.”

All animals rescued by The Nature Trust – Malta FEE are protected species and it is illegal to harm them or keep them as pets in Malta.

Their volunteers have wildlife handling licenses and training, as well as the equipment to rescue these creatures.

NTM advises that if anyone sees a wild animal it has rescued injured or in danger, please call Malta Wildlife Rescue on 99999505.

“We extend our sincere gratitude to the members of the public who call us when an animal is found in danger, our veterinarians and our dedicated rescue and rehabilitation volunteers,” NTM said.

The wildlife rehabilitation project is being implemented by The Nature Trust – Malta branch of FEE Malta Wildlife Rescue, with support from ERA – Environment and Resources Authority, Lottoland Malta, Melita and Megastore.
