Three grass fires about an hour apart put authorities on high alert midday Friday. Viewer-submitted footage showed black smoke billowing off Highway 16. A driver can be heard in the video saying he was surprised the fire got worse. Just before 1 p.m., Guam Fire Department teams responded to Chalan Bareta in Dededo where a grass or trash fire of about 1 acre was reported. Later, at 1:51 p.m., GFD also responded to two grass fires on Carmen Memorial Drive in Tamuning and South Ukudo behind St. Paul Christian School. Firefighters from the GFD and the Guam Department of Agriculture’s Forestry Division worked throughout the afternoon to put out the fires. Meanwhile, the National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for Guam that is in effect until 7 p.m. Friday. A Fire Weather Warning is also in effect until Sunday night.
