Palau Koror – Palau’s Ministry of Justice (MOJ) said it will not pursue drug trafficking cases related to packages containing methamphetamine intercepted in the Philippines.
Philippine authorities seized the package at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport. The recipient was a Chinese national named Mr. Cui who lived in Koror Island, Palau. The package contained 207.9 grams of methamphetamine hydrochloride, commonly known as ice.
According to Justice Department officials, the decision not to pursue the case was made because there was no clear link to Palau. “Due to the lack of a link to Palau,” authorities said, “we will not pursue this case or further investigate any Palauan individuals suspected of involvement in this case.”
Authorities also confirmed that Mr. Cui had no connection to previous drug cases in Palau.
Calls to the Justice Department’s public information office seeking comment on this specific case were unsuccessful.
Philippine police estimated that the value of the drugs seized in the Philippines was more than $24,000. A Palau anti-drug official with experience in drug enforcement said: “The amount of drugs in Palau is three to four times that amount.”
The interception, first reported by foreign media Manila Standard, came as a shock to many Palau residents, who remain concerned about Palau’s growing drug problem despite a drop in reported drug busts in recent months.
