Paris Games 800m champion Algerian middle-distance runner Djamel Sedjati, who competed on Sunday in the eighth stage of the 2024 Diamond Athletics League, said on Tuesday he could achieve better results at the 2024 Paris Olympics (July 26-August 11, 2024).

“I am happy with my race and now prepare for next week’s Monaco race. I am confident that I will calmly prepare for the Paris Olympics in the coming weeks. I know I can do better there,” Segati told professional sports website AthleticsAfrica.

Sedjati’s time of 1:41.56 was the third best ever and also a new national record. The former (1:42.61) has been held by Taoufik Makhloufi since the summer of 2016.

“I think this result is the fruit of a long and difficult preparation process under the guidance of my coach Amar Beneda, and I am always grateful to him for all the work he has done for me. Now is the time to prepare concretely for the Paris Olympics and why not win a gold medal?” he added.

The Tiaret native (24) will compete in the 800m at the Monaco Open on Friday (7:23 pm Algeria time), the ninth stage of the Diamond League, to confirm once again his great potential at this distance.

Segati will face strong opponents in Monaco, including Kenyan Emanuel Vagnoni, Frenchman Gabriel Touré and even Canadian world champion Marco Arop.

As a reminder, middle-distance runners Taoufik Makhloufi, Aïssa Djabir Saïd-Guerni, Slimane Moula and Djamel Sedjati are the only athletes in the history of Algerian athletics to have run below 1.44.

Two other Algerian middle-distance runners who have qualified for the 800m at next Olympics, Slimane Moura and Mohamed Ali Gouwaned, are also in the final stages of preparation before heading to Paris, but have chosen to skip the Monaco leg of this year’s Diamond League.
