Many Greek islands are facing water shortages despite the upcoming tourist season and local authorities are considering restricting water use, Reuters reported.
On the island of Naxos, located between Athens and Crete, its main reservoir almost completely dried up in the summer heat, threatening local agriculture.
On Karpathos, an island between Crete and Rhodes, local authorities have imposed limits on how much water can be filled into pools, while on several other islands authorities hope to buy plants to convert seawater into fresh water to cope with water shortages.
Much of the country has gone months without adequate rainfall, with a dry spring and summer followed by one of the warmest winters on record.
The difficult water situation is made more challenging because the country is currently experiencing a large influx of tourists, who are an important source of income for local businesses, meaning increased consumption.
