Nutrition experts reveal the surprising health benefits of ice cream, especially when compared to other nutrient-deficient desserts. Two-thirds of a cup of dairy ice cream is a good source of calcium, which maintains bone and muscle strength.

Some types of ice cream provide about 6 grams of protein per serving, depending on the brand, which is the same amount as eggs.

The “combination of protein and moderate fat” can slow the release of sugar into the bloodstream, thereby preventing the severe spikes in blood sugar associated with diabetes, and ice cream does this better than other less nutritious desserts.

Nutritionist Stephanie van ter Zelweden notes that the combination of moderate amounts of fat and protein makes ice cream a good choice for people with diabetes.

Combining fat and protein with sugar “reduces the blood sugar spike you might experience when eating a low-fat dessert,” she said.

At the same time, experts warn against consuming large amounts of ice cream, as some ice creams may contain high levels of sugar and fat, which are harmful to the body. It is recommended to choose healthy types based on dairy products.

People with diabetes should also be careful about eating ice cream.
