More than 250 trade unions in Sri Lanka’s public sector will go on sick leave today (9th), which could affect public services across the country.
These include organizations such as public administration, development officers, drivers and office staff.
Their main demand is an increase in allowance of Rs 25,000 like that of administrative officers.
This action by the union caused serious disruption to the functioning of government departments and ministries yesterday.
Meanwhile, Ceylon Teachers Union general secretary Joseph Starling said teachers and principals would hold a sick-out protest today.
Ajith K. Thilakarathne, general secretary of the University Non-Academic Employees Union, said that the University Non-Academic Employees Union will also participate in the union action today by taking sick leave.
Today marks the 70th day of strike by non-academic staff at the university.
Their demands include an increase in monthly allowances and removal of a 15 per cent wage anomaly.
Meanwhile, postal workers continued their strike for the second day today, demanding recruitment of staff to fill vacant positions in the Postal Department, providing permanent positions to non-permanent employees, among other reasons.
More than 20,000 postal workers from 4,700 post offices and post offices in Sri Lanka participated in the union action.
The United Postal Union Front claimed that the strike resulted in the closure of 90% of post offices islandwide.
HA R Nihal, co-convener of the United Postal Union Front, warned of a prolonged strike if their demands were not met.
