Photo: As the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands enters its dry season, the Department of Fire and EMS has fought four fires in the last week. A large brush fire broke out over the weekend across from St. Jude Parish in Koblerville. The fire, reported early Friday morning, was the fourth fire the Department of Fire and EMS has fought in the area, according to Rob Mojica, a spokesman for the department. “We had four grass fires last week, three on Thursday and one on Friday,” he said. Mojica said the most recent fire started around 1 a.m. in the As Gonno/Koblerville area and multiple units responded. The Department of Fire and EMS was able to contain the fire around 3 a.m. In total, Mojica reported, there may have been five or six acres of grass burned.
