DETROIT (AP) — Jake Rogers hit a two-run single in the eighth inning and broke a tie on an error, giving the Detroit Tigers a 1-0 win over the American League Central-leading Cleveland Guardians on Monday night.
Guardian shortstop Brayan Rocchio was responsible for an error when Mark Canha’s ground ball slipped under his glove, which allowed Rogers to score from third after he advanced on Wenceel Pérez’s single.
Taylor Holden (4-1) earned the win, with Shelby Miller pitching the ninth for her first save of the season, totaling 2 2/3 perfect innings.
Detroit rookie right-hander Cade Montero allowed no runs in 6 1/3 innings, allowing just three hits and one walk.
Cleveland’s Gavin Williams pitched 5 1/3 scoreless innings. The right-hander allowed four hits, walked once and struck out five just a week after his season debut was delayed by elbow discomfort.
The Tigers have won four straight games, including three in Cincinnati, where they earned their first sweep since May and second of the season. Detroit is fourth in the AL Central and has a long way to go to catch Cleveland in the division.
For the Guardian team, Dominican Angel Martinez went 2-for-4. Venezuelan Andres Jimenez went 3-1 and Vincel Perez went 4-2.
Tigres, Puerto Rican Javier Baez 3-1. Colombian Gio Urshela 4-1.
