This is a high, extremely hot air mass hovering over the western United States, with temperatures of +35°C at 1500 meters above sea level, in parts between Nevada, Arizona and California. This heat dome will persist this week while moving a little eastwards.
This boiling air has been going on for several days, causing records to be broken in some cities. Las Vegas reached 49°C this Sunday, breaking the previous record of 47°C. In the famous Death Valley, the temperature even rose to 53.5°C, and a motorcyclist died in this extreme heat. However, this temperature is still nearly 1°C lower than the absolute record of the station. More northern states such as Oregon also saw high temperatures, with Salem reaching 39°C, again breaking the previous record.
These very high temperatures have also affected California, exacerbating the situation on the fire front. Authorities count 21 outbreaks across the state, most of which are out of control, especially due to these heat wave conditions. One of the most explosive and threatening fires is the Lake Fire, not far from Santa Barbara. This Sunday it covered more than 5,000 hectares with 0% containment. A heat advisory remains in effect and will remain in place this week. The National Weather Service said that this part of Southern California has not seen such an intense heat wave in nearly 20 years.
The heat dome will extend eastward over the next few days, so that by next week, nearly the entire country will be affected by severe heat waves. This Sunday, about 130 million Americans were under heat wave alerts. That number will increase significantly this week.
