Before the shooting
Reliable sources said that powerful drug peddler Kanjipani Imran was behind the shooting incident in Aturugiria yesterday which left two persons dead, including Surendra Wasantha Perera alias ‘Club Wasantha’.
Police sources said almost every bullet fired was marked with “KPI”.
Kanjipani was involved in drug trafficking and called himself “KPI”.
The attacker
Intelligence agencies said the drugs he ordered from Pakistani smugglers were marked with “KPI”.
The police reported that so far, there has never been a case in history of shootings planned by gangsters in which a bullet had left such marks.
Two men armed with T-56 weapons carried out the shooting, and investigators found the words “KPI” clearly written on the bullet casings in marker.
Police said the ammunition was different in color from normal ammunition and would be submitted to government analysts to see if it was coated with liquid. Police suspected the ammunition was coated with a golden liquid.
Police suspected that the gunman might have coated the bullets with some liquid as Vasanta was wearing a suraya (amulet) that protected him from gunfire.
Meanwhile, police found the car used in the Aturugiria shooting in the Kolatuota area of Kaduwera.
Singer K. Sujeewa hospitalized
Six people, including pop singer K. Sujeewa, were rushed to hospital following the shooting, which took place at the opening of a tattoo and piercing studio.
However, Wasantha Perera and a 38-year-old man succumbed to their injuries.
Sujeeva and four others are currently receiving treatment in hospital.
CCTV cameras nearby recorded the movement of the vehicle the suspects were travelling in and the gunman who carried out the shooting.
Therefore, the police are investigating and arresting the suspect.
According to intelligence sources, Kanjipaani Imran, who is suspected of signing the contract for the attack, is currently moving between Dubai and France and is said to have direct links with powerful drug dealers in Pakistan.
