Portal Politico writes that a majority of MEPs from the AfD could join a potential group called “Sovereignty”.
A Hungarian government spokesman announced on Monday that the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party will not join the new political faction of the European Parliament, the European Patriots Party. TASR informed this, according to Reuters.
On June 30, Orbán announced that he and former Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babis would form an alliance described by foreign media as far-right. Orbán’s Fidesz, Babis’s ANO Movement and the Austrian Freedom Party (FPÖ) became the first members. In the European Parliament, the Patriot Party will become the third largest faction with 84 members, second only to the European People’s Party (EPP) and the Socialists and Democrats (S&D).
Potential Group
Regarding the emergence of political families in the European Parliament, the Politico portal writes that the majority of the AfD MEPs could join a potential group called “Sovereigns”. Negotiations are currently underway on its members, which include the name of Slovak MEP Milan Uhrík from the Republican Movement.
However, according to Politico, citing the Identity and Democracy (ID) group, some AfD MEPs want to join the European Patriots group. In this case, the sovereign bloc will not be formed because it does not have a sufficient number of representatives.
Existing or new factions in the European Parliament must announce their names and composition by July 15. From July 16 to 19, the European Parliament’s constitutional plenary will be held in Strasbourg, where MEPs will elect a president and 14 vice-presidents and the treasurer, chairmen and vice-presidents of committees and delegations.
