Dili, July 5, 2024 (TATOLI) — In the presence of Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao and presided over by House Speaker Maria Fernanda Ley, Rui Pereira dos Santos was sworn in as Commissioner of the Anti-Corruption Commission (CAC) for a four-year term.
Gusmao spoke at the event and asked the new commissioner to put national interests first and fight corruption in the country.
Rui dos Santos responded that he would assume his new responsibilities in a responsible, impartial and professional manner.
Santos promised that he would seek support from the prosecutor’s office, the Court of Appeal and the Ministry of Justice so that CAC officers could receive training in the field of investigation.
Santos served as a judge at the Dili Court of First Instance from 2000 to 2005. From 2010 to 2014, he served as Deputy Ombudsman for Human Rights and Justice; from 2016 to 2018, he served as Deputy Commissioner of the CAC.
The swearing-in ceremony was attended by Justice Minister Sergio Hornai, Vice Minister of Parliamentary Affairs Adérito Hugo, Attorney General Alfonso Lopez and leaders of the KHUNTO, CNRT and PD political parties.
