Today, Cyprus and its role in the Gaza war are once again the target of Turkish media, this time based on an article from the French newspaper Le Figaro. The publication on the information sites of nationalist orientation (Haber7, Turkiye, TRHaber) today copied and presented the content of the publication in the French newspaper Le Figaro, in which “French secret service officials claim that Mossad operates through a secret base located in Cyprus”.

According to Turkish media reports, “French intelligence officials said in an interview with France’s Le Figaro that Israel hopes to spread the war to the Mediterranean. It was revealed that the South Cyprus Command also approved the establishment of a Mossad base on the island.”

A French intelligence source told Figaro that Mossad had been in close contact with Greek Cypriot security forces even before it established a base in Cyprus.

“Israel has been working with South Cyprus intelligence services before setting up at least one Mossad base with dozens of personnel,” the French agent said.

According to the newspaper, the Greek Cypriots opened Cypriot airspace to Israeli warplanes, providing these aircraft with a wide maneuvering range to avoid air defense systems.

According to Turkish media reports, a diplomat interviewed by Le Figaro “warned” the Republic of Cyprus to be careful in the face of threats from Hezbollah and claimed that the Israeli army “is practicing an invasion of Lebanon” during the exercises. Cyprus starts in 2022.

The French diplomat, who was previously posted in Nicosia, said: “Israel has strengthened its relations with the Greek Cypriot government, especially in the post-2020 period, and sent its troops to South Cyprus in May 2022, as a ‘chariot of fire’ in alliance with the Greek Cypriots. We must remember that Cyprus is considered Israel’s hinterland. Israel has conducted invasion maneuvers on the territory of Cyprus because it is similar to the territory of Lebanon.”

Turkish media recalled that on June 19, Hassan Nasrallah, the leader of Lebanon’s Hezbollah, declared that “South Cyprus” had become a “Jewish yard” and issued a warning to Nicosia. “Opening Cyprus’ airports and bases to aircraft targeting Lebanon means that Cyprus is involved in the war.”

Anadolu analysis: “Cyprus will not escape the fire”

Meanwhile, in an analysis conducted today by Turkey’s Anadolu Agency, he also warned that if Cyprus becomes a base for attacks on Gaza, “it will not be able to escape the fire.”

“It is impossible to think that developments, which could come in the form of a larger war or a larger peace, will ‘bypass’ the island of Cyprus, which is only a few hundred kilometers from the Middle East,” said Professor Hussein Ishiklal, special adviser on international relations and diplomacy to Turkish leader Ersin Tatar, who sounded the alarm about the behavior of some countries that could use Cyprus as a base to support the Israeli army and could affect the island and the region.

“We see that the EDNK-Greece-Israel alliance, formed under the leadership of the United States, is becoming increasingly stronger. The main purpose of this formation is to confine Turkey, the strongest country with the longest coastline in the Eastern Mediterranean, to the Gulf of Antalya, and to remove the Turkish side from the political and energy geopolitical equation in the Eastern Mediterranean by breaking the strategic position of the Republic of Northern Cyprus”.

Cyprus Strategy

The statement made by US Secretary of State Antony Blinken during a reception for the Greek Foreign Minister demonstrated to Turkish media analysts the role played by Cyprus.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, in a reception for the Greek Foreign Minister on the start date of the Israeli invasion of Gaza, made a statement: “Over the past eight months, the United States has learned about the strategic value of Cyprus in terms of military operations”. Blinken’s statement naturally raised questions that the Greek Cypriot leadership has never been able to answer, such as what are Cyprus-based military operations, how British bases on the island are used in these operations, and whether military bases are also used in these enterprises.

“Using Cyprus as a base would open a front in the region”

Turkey’s analysts reacted to the allegations of using Cyprus as a military base by warning that this would have dangerous consequences for the entire Mediterranean. The impact of this position on the security and economy of Cyprus is expected to be far-reaching, threatening the lives and socio-economic activities of both communities on the island.

“The fact that the GCASC, a staunch defender of the Netanyahu government, is increasingly yielding to the United States and engaging in equipment and military systems in the Eastern Mediterranean to serve Israel will certainly not make the island safer. On the contrary, the attitude of the EDNK will endanger the lives of the people of both countries on the island and will disrupt the tourism, education and service sectors that are the lifeblood of the two Cypriot economies.”

Turkish analysts at Anadolu believe that the current regional crisis and the emerging role of Cyprus (according to Turkey) “reveal” the importance of Turkish Cypriot “rule” on the island. The crisis proves the need to recognize the pseudo-state not only for the sake of the Turkish world, but also for the sake of peace, trust and stability in the region.

“In conclusion, every regional crisis involving Cyprus shows how important the concept of ‘sovereignty’ is for the life and existence of the Turkish Cypriots on the island. These and similar incidents show how necessary the recognition of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus is not only for the Turkish world but also for peace, trust and stability in the region. The Turkish Cypriot Mujahideen, who experienced first-hand between 1963 and 1974 the attempted genocide to which the Palestinian people are subjected today, will never be complicit in the massacre in Gaza, where crimes against humanity are being carried out at full speed at all times, nor will they take any action on the same side as the parties that are directly or indirectly involved in this crime against humanity. Believing that it is an important factor in the region, the Greek Cypriot Government adopts dishonest, contradictory, exaggerated and absurd policies that will continue to be part of the problem and not the solution”, said Hussein Ishiklal.
