The Commander of the Armed Forces, General Onno Eichelsheim, today presented the Royal Order to his Lithuanian colleague, General Valdemaras Lupsis. The ceremony took place at the Dutch residence in the capital, Vilnius. General Lupsis was awarded the Knight of the Order of Orange-Nassau for his outstanding service to the Netherlands Armed Forces.
General Eichelsheim praised General Rupsis for his commitment to peace and security within NATO over the years and for his hospitality to the Dutch Armed Forces in Lithuania. Since 2017, the Netherlands has actively contributed to strengthening the forward presence in Lithuania, where thousands of Dutch soldiers have served. The cooperation between the Dutch and Lithuanian Armed Forces has yielded valuable lessons and strengthened ties.

On the same day, Eichelsheim received the Lithuanian Order of Merit from Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda. He was awarded this honor in recognition of the Netherlands’ contribution to strengthening the Lithuanian Armed Forces and further developing military cooperation between the two countries and NATO partners. The Netherlands’ top military officer visited the Dutch troops in Rukla on the same day. The Ministry of Defense sent 270 soldiers to strengthen NATO’s military presence in Lithuania, the so-called ” Enhanced forward presence.
