Paramaribo residents demand action to fix clogged sewers

Several residents of Paramaribo, Suriname, told GFC News that urgent action must be taken to clean up the city’s sewers.

They complained that many wells were clogged with all kinds of waste, including garbage.

A staff member of the Department of Public Works (OW) said on the phone recently that the department does not have any sand pumping vessels for the time being.

Therefore, the problem of clogged sewers still exists and people hope to be able to solve this problem themselves.

Some victims find this unacceptable and believe that the government should release sufficient funds to purchase new machines (if necessary) in the shortest possible time.

“It is the government’s responsibility to ensure a clean and safe living environment and drain away excess rainwater as much as possible,” said one of the disgruntled people.

“We pay taxes and expect these types of basic facilities to be well maintained.”

Residents called on the authorities to act quickly and take necessary steps to clean up the drains and provide better infrastructure.
