The people of Kayonza are proud that they no longer have to pump water for drinking water
He made the announcement on Sunday, July 7, 2024, as members of the FPR Inkotanyi group in Kayonza, Gatsibo, Rwamagana and Ngoma districts were campaigning for the group’s candidate for the head of state.
Mutagoma said access to water is a major problem in many parts of Kayonza district because the available water comes from lakes and swamps below the mountains, which stunts the growth of children.
For him, he will never forget that when he was a secondary school student in Nyamirama district, he and his classmates had to take a bath twice a week because they were forced to fetch water from the mango trees on Kimpunu Hill.
He said: “Before going to school, we used to water the plants at a place called Kimpunu down the hill, and when we were in secondary school, some of us used to choose to go there only twice a week because the situation there was dirty, and you know, we also washed twice a week.”
He also said that when they used to go home on holidays, because their family was in the Garhini district, they used to go to the spring of Muhazi Lake to fetch water so that if it was not eaten by the sundews, they would come back and eat it.
“This swamp called Ntaruka used to be home to ants, and you would walk around in it and eat it, and let me tell you, when we were young we used to say ansandi would eat it,” he said. “That means if you take your foot off and it doesn’t grow back, when you drive it into the mud, we would eat it because that’s the water we used.”
Mutesi Anita also said that the water problem in Gazibo and Kayonza areas was very serious, but it has now been resolved and people no longer have to fetch water in the valleys or down the mountains.
This problem is also a problem for farmers as drinking water for their cattle is a problem but water tanks have been dug in the river and tents get water from the government and people using solar radiation.
He said, “Thank you for giving us water. In the past summer, cows died from lack of water because there was no place to put them. Now there is a technology that can push water into the cows’ udders, and the breeders will dance.”
Another thing Kayonza appreciated about presidential candidate Paul Kagame was the roads linking the various districts that have been built and connecting those districts to the border of Kabrimbo, which has increased investment in Kayonza Central and another in Kabarondo to Akagera Park.
Kayonza has also become a tourist lodge due to the arrival of some animals no longer found in Akagera Park and the benefits that tourism brings to the people.
They are also satisfied with their housing as they are not living on grass and they have established model villages around the district and have built welfare homes for children there and taught parents to prepare healthy meals for them.
Rwamagana particularly praised the horticulture projects and industrial land for providing employment opportunities for many young people.
They also praised Kagame for developing the Eastern Province despite being backward, with each region having four universities, two modern hospitals, and more.
