Are electric cars suitable for car enthusiasts?

The advantages are undeniable, but something is missing

Electric vehicles are more powerful than internal combustion engine vehicles, mainly due to the characteristics of electric motors. Even the standard all-wheel drive “Hyundai Ioniq 5” electric car can reach 100 km/h in just 5.1 seconds, ahead of many sports models. When engineers really push themselves, electric propulsion can provide drivers and passengers with an exciting interstellar flight experience. The 1020-horsepower “Tesla Model S Plaid” reaches a rocket-like 100 km/h in just two seconds. Although the batteries make such vehicles relatively heavy, modern suspension technology allows them to move flexibly even on winding tracks; the new four-door “Porsche Taycan Turbo GT”, which weighs more than two tons, traversed the legendary Nürburgring track, also known as the “Green Hell” by car enthusiasts, in 7 minutes and 7.5 seconds, beating many large-caliber supercars such as Lamborghini Huracan Performante, McLaren 720S, “Mercedes-AMG GT R”.

Although the technology makes the automotive world doff its hat, sporty electric cars are not of interest to confident petrol-heads, adventurous driving enthusiasts who prefer the roaring internal combustion engine. Why?

“Technically, electric cars can be superior. However, when it comes to driving pleasure, speed is not everything – emotion and interaction are also important, and even a near-perfect electric drive system cannot provide this. It works in a simple way. “For example, despite the impressive engineering of the Porsche Taycan, it becomes monotonous after two laps on a racetrack,” says Egidijs Babelis, a journalist for the Lithuanian TV program Autopilot.

What does a sporty electric car need? A large number of car experts from all over the world claim in their media resources that when driving an electric car, they lack more driving involvement, that is, the charm of the car.

Electric cars rated higher than petrol supercars

Recently, Hyundai has launched a sports electric car with a completely different concept: the Ioniq 5 N is equipped with two electric motors that produce 650 hp and can reach 100 km/h in just 3.4 seconds. The car has an electronic limited-slip differential on the rear axle, which is suitable for use on the racetrack.

Judging by the numbers, it’s a very fast car, but not one of the fastest. The athletes of the German magazine “Auto Motor und Sport” beat the Nürburgring in 7 minutes and 45 seconds. This lap time is commendable, but still not a top result. Although Hyundai engineers developed this model on the world’s most famous racetrack, they do not publicly reveal lap times. The “Ioniq 5 N” is not designed for top speed, but for an adventurous driving experience.
