Directed by Italian Gianluca Neri, the documentary series recreates the case in five episodes based on a “rigorous and in-depth study of 60 documentary files” during the investigation, which consists of 60,000 pages and hundreds of gigabytes of images, audio and video, as Netflix announced in a statement.
After beginning work on the documentation in 2017, the authors began outlining the structure of the series in 2021.
The play “reconstructs the investigation into the girl’s disappearance, which culminated in the arrest” of Massimo Bossetti, who was later sentenced to life in prison for her murder.
“Through testimonies, reconstructions, exclusive interviews (including with Bosetti himself and his wife Marita) and unpublished material, the facts surrounding the case, the diversionary accusations and doubts about the methods of the investigation are explored,” the Netflix series also states. “The truth about some of the Bosetti family’s family connections is revealed.”

Massimo Bossetti, a carpenter who was married with three children, was sentenced to life in prison in 2016 for Gambirasio’s 2010 murder, a sentence that was confirmed a year after his defense lawyers appealed.
At the time, the convicted man denied the allegations and assured that he was not the girl’s killer, and considered his conviction to be “the greatest miscarriage of justice in history.”

The murder of Gambirasio on November 26, 2010, when he was 13, is one of the most notorious cases in recent years, and even large-scale genetic testing was carried out throughout the region in order to clarify it.
The body of the young woman from Brembate di Sopra in Milan was found 10 km from her hometown with knife wounds and blows to the head three months after she disappeared.
Gambirasio’s case has made its way to the big screen in 2021, with Netflix releasing a film directed by Marco Tullio Giordana.
