Authorities in Wau, the capital of Western Bahr el Ghazal state, said preparations to mark the 13th anniversary of South Sudan’s Independence Day on July 9 have been completed.

The state’s police commissioner, Major General James Simon Yasi, in an interview with Radio Tamazui on Sunday, said joint forces had been deployed to protect celebrants and their properties, among other security measures.

“We took the necessary procedures to hold the July 9 celebrations. In accordance with state policy, we formed a committee to deal with this issue, they have completed their work and now all the organized forces are ready,” he said. “They have made preparations in terms of the parade and we are now thinking about how to hold the event. All committees have submitted the necessary budgets to the state authorities and tomorrow (Monday), we should be making final preparations.”

“Finally, on July 9, the official celebration of Western Bahr el Ghazal State will take place in Wau, where all citizens and all organized forces will march to the stadium where we will hold the final celebration,” General Yassi added.

He said state officials, led by Gov. Sarah Cleto Rial and Vice Gov. Zackaraia Joseph Garang, would attend the event.

“The troops will be divided, some will march and some will take measures to protect civilians in all residential areas,” General Yassi said.

The state’s Information Minister, Nicola Samuel, said the town mayor had taken steps to ensure total cleanliness in Wau, including painting roundabouts, shops and other buildings in colourful paint.

“You can see that cleaning is going on right now and the mayor is even painting some roundabouts in the town and many orders have been issued by the mayor. This is a very commendable activity and I thank the mayor for all he has done,” he said. “I want to tell the people of Western Bahr el Ghazal State and the people of South Sudan that Independence Day is bigger than all of us and they should celebrate it. Without the hard work of the SPLA and the contributions of the people of South Sudan, our free country would not have been possible.”

Samuel added: “Preparations for the planned events are going well and you can see young people from Wau practising for the marathon that day.”

The state government last week formed a committee to raise funds and prepare for the celebrations.
