Embers from a nearby barbecue grill may have been to blame for the Cocos Island fire. Authorities are still investigating the cause of the fire. On Tuesday, a video showed large smoke billowing into the air. Multiple calls to 911 were received around 10:30 a.m. today. Crews from the Guam Fire Department and the Department of Agriculture responded by boat to the island near Maleso. It took about three hours for the fire to be contained. Officials confirmed that the flames burned two hectares of land on the private side of the north end of the island. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but authorities said island residents admitted that they were grilling and the wind blew embers into the brush, and they didn’t realize the fire would grow so quickly.
