Rechad er Belau, or Palauans, are our indigenous people and we refer to our country by this traditional name, which we now call the Republic of Palau. We are a sovereign nation that gained independence in 1994. Our island nation is an archipelago made up of approximately 340 islands, islets and atolls. Eight of the islands are inhabited. Palau is the westernmost island in the Micronesia region of the Pacific Ocean. It is less than 2,000 miles south of Japan, 3,815 miles southeast of India, 400 miles north of Papua New Guinea, 950 miles southeast of the Philippines, and 830 miles southwest of Guam.
