The National Electoral Agency (ANE) has said it has decided to organize local elections next October. The president of the body, Barthélemy Mathias Morouba, expressed his position on July 5 in Bangui. During this meeting organized by the Consultative Framework, the body assured electoral stakeholders of the progress of the process. However, for civil society, there is no need to rush.
The meeting initiated by the Consultative Framework aimed at collecting information on the electoral process mobilized political actors and civil society leaders. “We are organizing general information days, especially about the revision of the electoral register which will be carried out as soon as possible. All these materials will arrive in a month at the latest. As soon as we get them, we will start reviewing the documents immediately,” said Barthelemy Mathias Moruba, chairman of the National Electoral Administration.
However, a number of suggestions were made during the discussion. For civil society, there is no point in rushing.
“ANE regrets lack of resources”
“We see no need to rush into a botched election. Today, the ANE deplores the apparent lack of resources to organize these elections. said Dieudonné Ngoumbango, president of the Coordination of Centrist Parties.
This information meeting on the progress of the electoral process comes at a time when some opposition parties have said they will boycott the next local elections, demanding reforms to the National Electoral Commission and the Constitutional Council, which they consider biased, and another opposition party, the MDREC, has called for postponing the vote until 2025. But the parties must wake up to the consultative framework that notes the progress of the process.
“Things are going very well. It is true that certain election stakeholders are still reluctant to do so. But we, the coordination cadres, are doing our best. We go to them and ask them to come back to the negotiation table.” Barbara Sanga, chairperson of the Coordinating Cadres, said.
The government insists that local elections will take place this year, and according to the ANE timetable, local elections will indeed take place in October next year.
