The Kurds, the Gaza war, developments on the Azerbaijan-Armenia front, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the use of artificial BroadCast Unitedligence were the main issues mentioned in the statement of Turkey’s National Security Council Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
In the statement from Turkey’s National Security Council, there was no mention of Greek Turks and Cypriots, despite initial reports in the Turkish media that these issues were on the agenda.
Regarding the Kurds, the statement noted that “the Security Council was informed that resolute, determined and successful operations are being carried out both at home and abroad to combat all threats and dangers to the integrity, unity and survival of our country, in particular against the terrorist organizations PKK/KCK-PYD/YPG”, but also against FETO (i.e. followers of Fethullah Gulen, whom Ankara blames for the 2016 coup attempt) and “Islamic State”.
The same statement stressed that “our coordination and cooperation with neighboring Iraq will enter a new stage by expanding the scope of agreements between our two countries, noting that concrete progress in the field of security will strengthen our joint efforts for the development of our region. The statement also stressed that “the support provided to the PKK/PKK/YPG, which has turned the territories it has seized in Iraq and Syria into a hotbed of terrorism, will be eliminated along with all its elements in our region, and no fait accompli that violates the security of our country and the territorial integrity of neighboring countries will be allowed.”
Regarding developments in the Gaza war, the Turkish National Security Council noted that “it is found that practices aimed at silencing voices against Israel around the world continue to carry out massacres in Gaza while ignoring its responsibilities under international law to stop crimes against humanity, once again exposing the dishonesty of those who claim to defend the rule of law, democracy and freedom of expression. On the other hand, it was noted that it is crucial to increase the recognition of the State of Palestine by more countries, to stand on the right side of history, and to intensify efforts to bring those responsible for the massacre to justice.”
In addition, the Security Council meeting “discussed the latest developments in the war in Ukraine, which is deteriorating the humanitarian situation in Ukraine, and assessed the possibilities of establishing a just and lasting peace as soon as possible, while stressing the importance of continuing efforts with the coastal countries to enhance navigation security in the Black Sea”.
In its statement, the Turkish National Security Council also referred to developments in the Caucasus, especially Azerbaijan-Armenia relations: “We hope that the positive progress in the negotiations between Azerbaijan and Armenia will lead to a peace agreement. We sincerely support all efforts aimed at establishing a lasting peace.
Finally, the statement “points out that the progress made in the field of artificial BroadCast Unitedligence offers great opportunities that can usher in a new stage in human history”. However, as emphasized, “capabilities in this field will bring a series of challenges and new threats to cyberspace” and that “the importance and priority of Turkey’s preparation for the scientific, military, economic and social consequences of advances in cyberspace is emphasized” Artificial BroadCast Unitedligence and the development of advanced capabilities in this field.
