Politico: U.S. offers deeper defense for Ukraine peace talks

According to Deutsche Welle, Politico reported the news with reference to the opinions of several US and European officials.

They said the US president’s new policy is aimed at strengthening Kiev’s position and forming a “strong hand” in negotiations with Moscow.

Occupy a deeper defensive position

As Politico notes, nothing has changed in the official White House rhetoric, but the U.S. is now discussing options with Ukraine for taking a deeper defensive position.

This includes strengthening air defenses and building obstacles along the front line, as well as constructing anti-tank obstacles and ditches along Ukraine’s northern border with Belarus. This shift to the defensive is intended to strengthen Kiev’s position in future negotiations.

“We want Ukraine to be in the strongest possible position if this were to happen,” said a Biden administration official who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Another step to put Ukraine in the best possible position for negotiations with Russia could be to speed up its admission to NATO, a Washington-based European diplomat told Politico.

The White House cannot publicly abandon its position

However, according to a White House representative, negotiations have not been planned so far, Ukrainian troops are continuing their offensive, and the Biden administration “is not dissuading them.”

An unnamed congressional representative told the publication that discussions about peace talks have begun, but the White House cannot publicly abandon its position due to the political risks for Biden.

As Politico’s interlocutor explains, the change in strategy is linked to the upcoming US presidential elections. A protracted conflict, without a real victory, could complicate Joe Biden’s re-election campaign and play into the hands of Donald Trump.
