A Chinese mafia is suspected of trafficking hundreds of their compatriots to Spain and then sending them to the UK via Gibraltar using forged documents, making millions of euros in profits.

Spain’s national police, which has arrested 14 suspects in the case, said the fugitives were hidden in tiny spaces and in extremely poor conditions after arriving in La Linea de la Concepción, a region of Spain bordering the British overseas territory of Gibraltar.

According to EFE, the authorities began investigating after noticing a large number of Chinese arriving in La Línea.

The mafia has reportedly set up infrastructure to hide Chinese nationals for weeks until they can enter Gibraltar using forged documents.

The National Police has arrested 14 people in connection with the case.

The migrants were kept in small rooms and were not allowed to move around the rest of the place where they were being held.

Spanish authorities believe the gang used fake passports, visas and stamps to bring migrants to Gibraltar, producing the documents through contacts in Turkey.

They were then able to travel to the UK using the same false documents.

Furthermore, the group allegedly used authentic travel documents of Chinese citizens because the original document holders were physically similar to the potential immigrants.

The gang is also suspected of drug trafficking, increasing profits by distributing and selling synthetic narcotics such as ketamine and MDMA.
